Could Tottenham Hotspur Win The Premier League This Season?

Última actualización 28 octubre, 2020 por Alberto Llopis

This Premier League season looks to be one of the most open in recent seasons, which means that a shock title winner could emerge. The lasting effects from the longest season in top-flight history remain, which means a number of teams are already suffering from injuries to their best players. The reigning champions are one of those sides, as they have already lost Virgil van Dijk to an ACL injury, and Fabinho could soon be joining the Dutchman on the sidelines for a prolonged period of time.

Those injuries will jeopardise the defensive structure that Jurgen Klopp has built his Liverpool success on, and there already looks set to be a number of teams gunning for the title. Manchester City are one of those teams, but defensive issues that haunted them last season remain, which could leave the door open for a team such as Tottenham Hotspur.

 Tottenham’s Forward Line

Even at this early stage of the season, Spurs have already seen their odds drop with Caesars Sportsbook to win the Premier League this term. One of the crucial reasons for that is the forward line of talent that Jose Mourinho has at his disposal. Heung Min-Son is already the top scorer in the league having scored eight goals in six games this season, while the partnership that the South Korean has with Harry Kane makes them one of the most dangerous partnerships in Premier League history according to the stats.

Kane has already contributed eight assists this season, and seven of them have led to direct goals for Son. No strike partnership has linked up for that many goals in the past ten years of top-flight football in England. Add to that the speed and flair that Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn bring to the table, and Spurs have a serious attacking three that can rival the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United.

 Gareth Bale Impact

Spurs also have one of the best players in the world to call upon if they find themselves in a sticky position, as they brought in Gareth Bale on a season-long loan from Real Madrid. Bale was a dominant player for Spurs when he was previously with the club, as he was an integral part of Spurs’ run in the Champions League in the 2010-11 season.

He left the club for Real Madrid in the summer of 2013 and went on to win the Champions League on four occasions. Fitness issues at Madrid meant that he found his playing time limited, but there is no doubt that Spurs have one of their best players in the league at their disposal if they can get Bale to full fitness.

What Could Stand In Their Way?

The signs look good for Spurs at this early stage, as they are stronger both offensively and defensively than the majority of their opponents. However, the Premier League is a marathon and not a sprint, and they will need to find consistency in their results to give them the best chance of winning the Premier League this season. However, in Jose Mourinho, they have a manager that has won the Premier League on three occasions in the past, and his know-how could be an important factor for the team as the season progresses.
